8 ways to improve your wellbeing

“If you don’t make time for your wellness, you will be forced to make time for your illness.”- Anonymous

The quote at the beginning of this blog speaks volumes.

We live in such a fast-paced society that we prioritise working and literally everything else before our health.

We barely make the time to relax, cook or do anything that is good for both our mind and body.

Take-away and fast-food places are so convenient that they have become almost a daily thing for too many people.

Particularly for employees and students.

This isn’t right.

When did we get so careless about our own health?

8 Ways To Improve Your Wellbeing

The body and mind are immensely connected.

What you put in your body also affects your mind and vice versa.

It’s really important to give both equal attention to be able to live a full, happy, and healthy life.

Balanced diet: This is a very simple concept but highly overlooked. Making sure that you are consuming your vegetables, fruits, and water daily will improve your health significantly.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t eat a chocolate or burger from time to time - having it in moderation is fine.

But if you do tend to eat a lot of junk food, or you smoke, and consume alcohol then those are the first things that you should either cut down or eliminate completely.

You don’t need these toxins in your body and brain.

You can also take supplements to make sure you’re getting all the minerals and vitamins needed for your body.

Exercise: Exercising improves mental health, decreases risk of disease, and improves muscle strength, just to name a few. I know that exercising can seem like a chore, and it can be difficult to start.

But implementing even a 30-minute workout routine daily, will benefit you long term! Maybe start with a 10-minute walk or ask someone to do it with you.

It will be easier to push through if you just remember the long-term benefits rather than focusing on the resistance to exercise.

Once exercising becomes a habit, you won’t even have to think about it!

Sleep: Everyone has a different relationship with sleeping. Some think it’s a waste of time, some don’t get to sleep, and some try to but can’t. Sleeping gives time to your body to heal.

When we’re sleeping our body starts its maintenance and repairing process. It literally keeps us healthy. You can’t make up for lost sleep. Making sure you sleep and wake up at the same time will maintain a healthy sleep cycle.

If you eat late and then sleep, your body at night will be kept busy digesting your food rather than working on healing the body. Make sure you do justice to yourself by keeping an appropriate time for everything.

Managing stress: One of the great killers of our health is stress. It stresses me out to even talk about it! We are no stranger to stress. This is why it’s so important to manage it.

Unfortunately, there are many factors that contribute to stressing such as work, relationship problems, not being where you want to be in life or even unconscious factors like social media.

One mantra that I repeatedly say to myself and remember is, “it is what it is”.

Knowing that every situation in life is temporary and that you are in control of your own life improves my mood and allows me to keep an optimistic attitude.

I believe that I can achieve anything I put my mind to. Sometimes all we need to do is not get carried away by our thoughts and emotions.

Another way to combat stress is to use social media appropriately.

By this I mean to use it for work purposes, communication, and sharing things with friends and family. Too many of us get carried away with comparing ourselves and scrolling through nonsensical stories.

Implementing a mindfulness practice such as meditation will help you live in the present moment and appreciate life more. Do it!

Detox: Detox is a way to cleanse the body of toxins. This is important to make sure that the body is in its healthiest form.

And it has benefits such as improving energy, metabolism, and getting rid of headaches.

Keeping good company: Draining people will drain the life out of you. It’s not worth it. Surround yourself with people that scream positivity, and don’t bring drama in every conversation.

This doesn’t mean that you should disregard your friends’ or families’ problems and become unsupportive of them. Just ensure that you are considerate towards them and treat them the way you want to be treated.

I think the hype about ‘toxic people’ has elevated a narcissistic attitude where people don’t even bother communicating their problems and just label them toxic and let go.

This is not the way to maintain relationships. Set boundaries and recognise when someone likes to talk about problems and gossip about other people rather than focusing on solving their issues and moving forward.

Enjoyable activities: Because of our busy schedules we forget to keep up with activities and hobbies that give us joy. What’s the point of working if you don’t have the time to have fun?

Make sure you schedule something fun to do every day. Even for an hour. This can lift your mood, make life worthwhile, and it’s a good opportunity to socialise.

Time for yourself: Take an hour everyday to do something for yourself, all alone. This could be to read a personal development book, reflect or just simply relax. You can take this time to plan on what you want to do the next day or spend time living in the moment.

I hope you implement theses methods to improve your wellbeing!

What do you do that gives you joy every day? Do you have any tips to become the healthiest form of yourself?
