This Is Controlling Your Life

“You either control your mind or it controls you”- Napoleon Hill

You might have heard that the brain is like an iceberg.

What you see on the surface is only 5-10%, but under the surface lies the rest.

The part that is unseen is the part that carries the weight of everything above. And if it wasn’t for that, the whole iceberg would fall apart.

iceberg.jpg

Similarly, our mind also has two parts. The surface is the conscious part of the mind and the subconscious part is the part that is under the surface.

This means what we consciously do and think is only 5-10%.

It’s important to remember though that we have only one mind so there’s no such thing as the subconscious mind and the conscious mind.

Just like there’s one iceberg but it has two sides.

What Is Controlled By Our Subconscious?

The subconscious part of our mind is where our program lies. This program is developed environmentally and genetically.

From the time we are welcomed on Earth to the age of about 6/7, we soak in everything that happens in our environment like a sponge.

What we acquire at that young age could be good or bad but it's accepted by our mind.

This is why kids can easily learn a language/s unlike an average adult.

It’s quite amazing actually.

But this is also a very crucial part of our lives because it forms the foundation for the rest of our lives!

The subconscious part of our mind controls our habitual behaviour, thought patterns, movement, every breath, EVERYTHING!

This means that we live on autopilot mode (most of the time) and it also explains why we do things that we know we shouldn’t and are reluctant to change things that we know will benefit us.

For instance, most of us know that we should work out, eat healthier or get up earlier.

But there’s something that makes that simple process so hard. We go about a few days committing to the new “thing” we want to do and then automatically go back to our old lifestyle.

This is because our brain likes familiarity.

The weirdest truth is that the subconscious part of the mind doesn’t know wrong from right. Real or fake. Good or bad. What you want or do not want.

It accepts everything as true and that’s the reason why your life looks like what it does.

The most incredible example of this was explained in Dr Joseph Murphy’s book called, 'The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind':

Imagine the conscious part of the mind as the captain of a ship and the subconscious part as the workers that work in the engine room of the ship.

The basement is where the engine room lies so this is where the workers control the boilers, instruments, gauges etc. The workers do not know where they are going, they have no idea what’s happening above water level.

They do not talk back to the captain they just follow his orders. They trust the captain to give them orders that would lead everyone in the right direction and follow those orders immediately.

That’s exactly how our mind works! Everything is obeyed by your subconscious.

Use it wisely.

How To Take Control From Your Subconscious.

Now that you know how your mind works, you can make it do what you want, use it to benefit yourself and prosper in every aspect.

Start digging deep into your environment, fears, limiting beliefs and thoughts.

Basically “un-fuck yourself”. This has been spreading widely on socials and funnily enough this is what we actually need to do.

We have been deeply conditioned so now we need to undo a lot of that because it doesn’t serve us.

Environment

What you feed into your mind is important. You can’t control what other people do and what happens in this world but you can control who and what you allow into your life and mind.

The external factors that you can control include:

  1. What you watch

  2. What you read

  3. What you listen to

  4. Who you surround yourself with

  5. What you eat and do

What do you do every day? Do your habits serve you? What do you watch? Does it make you laugh or cause distress? What do you read? Does it expand your thinking? Are you working towards your goals/purpose? Does your job truly satisfy you? Are your friends a good support system?

There are a number of things that add on to our anxieties. Cancel everything that doesn’t make you feel good.

Break the habits that don’t serve you. It takes 21-30 days to form a new habit. Everything becomes automatic after a while of doing it anyway, so you really have to push yourself and commit for a month.

Check your friends. Check who you socialise with, who you give energy to, do you feel drained being around them?

Do they talk about bettering themselves and living great lives? Do you feel good when you’re with them or do you feel as if there’s always some kind of drama or negativity?

Those that don’t serve you, let them go or just don’t give so much of your energy. This might sound selfish but it's true that “you become who you surround yourself with.”

Your group should inspire you, you should admire different qualities. Growth is vital for every individual. If you think you’re the best out of everyone you know, then you might need to get a new circle of friends.

But also check yourself first.

What do you mostly talk about when you are with others'? Do you help others'? Is it always about you?

Answer these questions honestly to yourself.

How do you add value to other people's lives? Do you leave them with a good impression? You could be conceited and so think you’re always the best out of everyone - check yourself first.

If someone doesn’t have the same morals as you or isn’t going where you would like to be doesn’t mean that they’re awful and you should cut them off.

Just notice how you feel after being in their company. How you feel will tell you what to do.

When it comes to family, that’s a tougher situation.

There are many differences. I believe most of the frustration comes from wanting to control each other and enforcing our own beliefs.

Disappointment and frustration comes from when everyone has expectations of what things SHOULD be like or what someone MUST do.

And we all have a different perception of the shoulds/musts so of course that would make it difficult to be compatible with each other.

Just let that go and create space for yourself.

Beliefs & Fears.

Did you know we were born with only two fears?

The fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. Every other fear has been acquired.

We acquire beliefs and fears based on our life experiences, parents, our environment, and the news/media.

Honestly, the news is so brutal and damaging. I’ve never been a fan of it.

“Someone just got stabbed here”.

“Some plane just dropped over there”.

“Something exploded near you”.

news cartoon.jpg

Ok, why do I need to know all of that? Why do you need to know all of that?

One plane crash occurred somewhere, but how many planes land safely on a daily basis?

If you consistently want to hear about people dying, riots & all the "shocking" things that happen all over the world then keep listening to the news.

Keep affirming that the world is a nasty place. It inevitably will be a nasty place, but just for you.

Some things are important to know, I understand. My issue lies with the fact that there’s barely any good news, and so much good does happen.

Most people believe that the world is bad and getting worse every day. This is not true.

There’s never been a time where the world has been a perfect place and it never will be. It’s balanced. But you can make your world extraordinary.

Think about it like this, most countries are on lockdown or have little freedom with the current covid-19 situation and unemployment rates are high plus so much more.

But there are people that are still opening businesses, travelling for a wonderful holiday break, getting married etc.

How? The media makes it seem like it’s impossible to live right now, but this isn’t the case.

If you are healthy right now, feel blessed. Switch off the news, don’t pay so much attention to it and know everything will be fine.

Our beliefs determine what we get in life, who we are and what we do. Analyse your beliefs.

Some limiting beliefs include, “money is the root of all evil”, “men are trash” and “bad things always happen to me”.

Is this true? There wouldn’t be any food on your plate without money. Money is an instrument that gives you access to things.

I also had a love/hate relationship with money due to listening to stories about greed and what money does to people and families.

Of course all negative. If someone expressed the different things they wanted to do to gain money I looked at them as they didn’t value anything real and were chasing materialistic things.

But that’s not true for everyone.

Money doesn’t cause anything evil. It’s the way some people have used this instrument that has caused bad things to happen.

“You can use electricity to kill someone or to light the house. You can use water to drown a child, or quench his thirst”. – Dr Joseph Murphy.

There’s always good and bad you can choose what side you want to look at.

If bad things have happened (like they do in everyone’s life), that doesn’t mean only bad things will happen in the future.

If you have had several bad, relationship experiences in the past, that doesn’t mean you always will.

Use affirmations repeatedly to change your beliefs.

Thoughts

“Fear is a thought in your mind, and you are afraid of your own thoughts”. – Dr Joseph Murphy.

Must read: ‘The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind’.

You don’t have a fear of public speaking, you fear the thought of making a mistake in front of so many people.

You don’t have a fear of heights, you fear the thought of falling.

You’re capable of accepting and rejecting information. You control how you feel and that’s really significant.

We all go about feeling things according to our 5 senses. We forget that we have higher faculties like perception and reason.

No one can make you feel angry. No one can make you upset.

Imagine someone just insulted you. They called you names and you don’t agree with what they’ve just said to you or about you.

You know what they just said is a misunderstanding and their reaction was completely out of order.

Isn’t it fair to say that they made a mistake? Why are you getting upset or angry about it? They just didn’t know. Simple.

You only feel upset or angry or anything really by your own thoughts.

You could easily get angry when someone has done something to you by thinking something among; “omg how could he/she say that? How could they do that when I’ve always treated them nice? They don’t even know me, this is so unfair”.

This is called having a victim mentality. Once you start feeling like life just happens to you, you’ve given up your control. This is a dangerous pathway. Stop!

The feeling always follows the thought. Be extra conscious about how you feel and then change it.

This is definitely the hardest thing for me. It’s so hard to change your pattern of thought especially when you only know one way of thinking/reacting.

But you must practice this like you practice anything.

Catch yourself when you think of anything negative and change it. See opportunity in everything rather than what you might have lost.

3 ways to be conscious of thoughts:

  1. Meditation- observe what comes into your mind.

  2. Writing in diary- reflect daily on what you think about.

  3. Being grateful- every time you complain, quickly say thanks for something.

Imagine being able to overcome anything using just your mind. You only live by one philosophy, “mind over matter” … because it really is mind over matter.

The mind truly is powerful. We see evidence of this with the placebo effect. Your mind can heal your body as well as create diseases. It takes practice to use this tool properly.

Are you ready to take back control?
