Top 11 tips on how to start a blog

Starting a blog may seem like the least exciting and longest process on Earth.

You may have questions such as, “Who will actually read this?”, “Is it worth putting so much time in a blog?”, “What will people think?” and “What can I get out of this?”

Truthfully, the reason why I started my blog is because I have faith in what I write and I believe that the people that need what I serve will read it.

Views are important to be able to start earning from a blog. But as long as you know that what you are doing is good and have a genuine passion for it, it will always be an exciting journey.

This is about what you love to do. Who cares about what other people will think?

So lets get into tip number 1:

1. What Does Blogging Mean To You?
It’s really important to establish why you want to do this because this is the reason you need to motivate you and stay committed.

Do you have a genuine passion for writing? What has led you to start a blog?

There may be days, weeks or months where you don’t see an increase in views or followers.

But for you to stay consistent, you need a reason why you started at all! Be specific and write it down as a reminder so you can fall back on it if you lose motivation.
2. What Are Your Brand Values & What Message Are You Trying To Send?

What is your goal? There are many influencers that don’t provide anything of value and service. Most of it is for fame and money, which is fine if that’s all you want…

I believe that respect should be earned and what you provide should be of value.

Think about what you can provide and write an introduction blog post to be clear with your audience about what your blog will provide as well as a little summary of yourself.

Full disclosure is essential so that your audience can connect to you and your purpose.
3. Keep Jotting Down Ideas.

Write down ideas about what you want to talk about or share. Use key terms and do research if you need to.

Jot down little things on notes on your phone whenever you think of something. I did this way before I published my blog, I had so many things that I wanted to express!

I can’t stress enough how important it is to be passionate about what you’re writing. This will make the writing process much easier and faster because it will flow out of you.

4. Write Down A Few Posts.
Write down a couple posts before officially publishing them to get the hang of it.

You will soon start to recognise the tone and style you write in. If you don’t like the way you write and feel like it won’t draw in an audience then you can keep working on them until you feel satisfied.

5. Make Sure You Enjoy Reading It.
Remember that you need to like what you write.

You should be able to enjoy what you wrote long after you’ve done it. You can always update and edit things after as well. Read from someone else’s perspective. Does it make sense?

If you have faith in what you write then you won’t be giving out any half-hearted energy and it will also encourage you to keep going.

6. Name Your Blog.
Think about a name that reflects your purpose. You can use your own name too if that’s what you want.

Who are you targeting? What is your core audience?

Think about it for long term…would you like this name to be THE name of your brand and what you will be known for?

Find a suitable content management system (CMS). I recommend Wix because I feel that it easy to use – there are glitches and unusual issues that may come up but there isn’t really a perfect CMS yet.

Think of a logo and buy a domain name if you’re serious. This doesn’t have to be straight away.

This is all very exciting! The greatest aspect about this is that you are doing this for you and no one else. This could ultimately become what you do for a living.

7. How Often Will You Post?
Decide when and how often you want to post a new blog. Consistency is key.

Work on your craft daily, even if it’s for an hour.

You will improve every time, spark new ideas and this work ethic will give you enough time to do research.

8. Just Do It!
Don’t think about starting it for too long and just do it.

I wasted a lot of time thinking about it, but kept jotting things down.

I thought about starting my own blog for so long that it actually became engrained into my subconscious and I felt like there was absolutely no way that I wasn’t going to have a blog of my own.

There is no perfect process.
You will learn as you go, the mistakes you make are lessons for how you need to go forward.
It’s quite fun being creative and doing everything yourself.

Believe in what you do and commit to it. There’s a very high possibility that you will achieve/gain what you want if you keep going rather than giving up because you thought that it wasn’t possible.

You’ll never know the scope of how far you could’ve gone. Keep this mentality and just do it.

9. Check Your Blogs Before Publishing.
It’s essential that you read over what you’ve written several times.

Sometimes its difficult to notice your own mistakes so having another pair of eyes reading through your work would be great.

My best friend proofreads my posts and gives me feedback before I publish my blogs. You could even start noticing a pattern on common mistakes.

Give yourself and your proof-reader enough time before you upload. This is definitely something that is a work in progress for me (LOL).

10. Marketing.
Finding the right tools to promote is very important. No matter how good and valuable your content is, unless you know good marketing tactics it will be difficult to reach a wider audience.

Social media of course is one of the best tools out there so make sure that you use it!

Keep researching and finding things that will help you get more traffic and grow your blog.

11. Make A Check List.
Once you get into the habit of writing, uploading and promoting – things may get a little hectic.

There are so many things to remember about each process so it will help if you keep a check list that will remind you of everything that needs to be done without feeling pressure.

I hope these tips help you get to your success. Have fun, be creative and good luck!
